§ 000 — Before The Game Begins

The player sees no prologue. No title card. No exposition. There is only darkness — and then cold air and trees.
1948. The A-1 reactor — codenamed "Annushka" — begins operation at Mayak. A light-water-cooled, graphite-moderated plutonium production reactor, built underground in a pit, sheltered from US bombers. It is the direct forerunner of the RBMK design. It suffers partial meltdowns within its first two months of operation. Workers handle irradiated fuel slugs with their hands.

1953. A classified variant of the A-1 design begins operation in an undisclosed valley in the Ural region — designated Facility V-ZERO. Built underground beneath a mountain lake. Purpose: weapons-grade material production and experimental reactor research. It does not appear on any public record. Two personnel are posted to a surface cabin: V-7 and M-3. Their orders: log all activity, permit no access, ask no questions.

Autumn 1957. During a controlled power test, Facility V-ZERO's reactor exhibits a violent anomalous response. Coolant void formation causes a positive reactivity feedback loop. The reactor briefly accelerates toward criticality before emergency shutdown. Three engineers in the lower chamber do not survive. The lead physicist writes a complete technical report describing the flaw precisely. The report is classified within forty-eight hours. It is never acted upon. The incident is publicly attributed to a chemical storage explosion — the Kyshtym disaster: the third most serious nuclear event in recorded history.

October 1957. M-3 descends to the lower facility to inspect a faulty heating element in sector 3. V-7 is on the surface. The second reactor event occurs. V-7 is found in the snow three kilometres from the cabin — head injury consistent with a shockwave. M-3 is not found. The ministry decides that V-7's continued silence is more reliably guaranteed if V-7 genuinely does not know what they are being silent about. The memory suppression is not accidental. V-7 is returned to civilian life. The rotation is never officially closed.

§ 001 — Act One: The Forest
1.1
The player wakes at a treeline. Night. Snow. A campfire burning ahead — [Checkpoint 1]. The screen edges dim when they move away from the fire. They warm on return. No text explains this.
1957–1987. The facility operates autonomously for thirty years. Heating, cooling, atmospheric regulation, reactor monitoring — all cycling without human input. No one told the systems to stop. The reactor's thermal output heats the cooling water continuously. The water transfers to the lake above. In thirty years of winter, the lake has not once formed ice. Something else takes hold in the warmth: plant life. Ferns. Moss. A sapling finding a crack in the concrete ceiling sixty metres below the snow.

A second fire on the hill — [Checkpoint 2]. It draws the player upward. The valley opens below. The lake: dark water in a crater of white cliffs, faintly luminous. It should be frozen. It is not.
April 26, 1986. Reactor No. 4 at Chernobyl undergoes a catastrophic power excursion during a safety test. The graphite-tipped control rods cause a brief positive reactivity spike on insertion. The positive void coefficient amplifies the effect. The building is destroyed. The 1957 report — classified, filed, never distributed — describes this exact sequence of events. It was written twenty-nine years earlier. It was correct in every detail. The RBMK design flaw it documents was built into every RBMK reactor constructed across the Soviet Union throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

At 02:47, a red flare tears upward from the valley floor. Simultaneously, a red beacon pulses on a distant factory structure across the valley. Two signals. Both red. The player decides.
1987. Post-Chernobyl, a sub-directorate investigation locates a reference to a 1957 classified technical report filed under Mayak administrative records. The reference leads to Facility V-ZERO. A duty officer traces the last active personnel file: V-7. Status: rotation incomplete. Technically still posted. The automated administrative system generates a reactivation notice — the same system sending quarterly maintenance logs to a ministry office that stopped reading them in 1961. This time, someone receives it. V-7 is told to retrieve the technical documentation. V-7 is not told what they will find.

The player crosses a narrow broken bridge. The cabin is visible — one structure, warm window, unremarkable. The door is locked from the inside. The red beacon pulses on the horizon. [Checkpoint 3 — Cabin Exterior]
The cabin door was locked from the inside by M-3 on the morning of October 4th, 1957, before descending to sector 3. Standard procedure when leaving the surface post unattended. It has not been opened since. The lock is interior. It cannot be opened from outside. The only other entry is below.

§ 002 — Act Two: The Descent
2.1
Path A — The Beacon: The factory is cold, institutional, derelict. A duty roster on the wall lists two designations. The roof gives way. The player drops into the dark. A storage room. Soviet crates. A staircase down. A corridor ending in a concrete tunnel.
The factory was constructed as a surface-level cover structure for the facility's northern access shaft. Its operational purpose was logistical: equipment transfer, personnel transit, plausible deniability. The duty roster — last updated October 1957 — lists V-7 and M-3 on concurrent posting, no end date recorded. The player will not understand the significance of these names until the logbook.
2.2
Path B — The Flare: A concrete passage in the cliff face. The spent flare casing, still faintly warm. The passage opens into a tunnel — concrete behind the rock, a heavy door slightly ajar. Fluorescent strips, flickering. Descending toward the mountain's core.
The cave entrance — designated Exit-C — was constructed in 1954 as an emergency egress. Unused for thirty years. The spent flare casing is recent. The facility's motion sensors on Exit-C triggered an active response protocol upon the player's approach. The automated PA system, broadcasting maintenance alerts on a thirty-minute cycle since 1957, registers a live presence for the first time.

Both paths merge in the same tunnel. The cold stops. No vignette. The hum is low, constant — not mechanical, more like the mountain is breathing. A tall ladder leads upward. The player climbs. They emerge through the cabin floor. [Checkpoint 4 — Cabin Interior]. The tunnel was here all along.
The cabin was never only a cabin. It was built directly above the facility's primary access shaft. The Watchers used the ladder daily — surface residence above, facility below. The hatch in the cabin floor, when locked from below, is indistinguishable from floorboard.

On the table: the logbook. Three winters of entries. Two alternating signatures — V. and M. The entries begin as maintenance records. Gradually become something else. Between two pages near the back: a watch. Soviet-era, mechanical, engraved. Stopped. October 1957.
M-3's watch — left on the table before the final descent to sector 3. The last entry, in M-3's handwriting: "Heating element in sector 3 again. Told V. I'd look at it tomorrow." Dated October 4th, 1957. No entry follows. The watch stopped at 4:14am — the electromagnetic pulse from the power excursion interrupted its mechanism at the moment of the event. It never resumed.

Below the logbook: a key. A vault door below the staircase. The key fits.
The surface key was standard protocol for dual-Watcher postings: one key held above, one below. The below key has not been retrieved. It remains at M-3's workstation, sixty metres underground, exactly where it was placed on the morning of October 4th, 1957.

§ 003 — Act Three: The Facility
3.1
The vault door opens. The world changes. Purple. Enormous. Soviet brutalism transitioning into something far more advanced than 1957 should contain. From the grated floor below: Cherenkov blue. The reactor pool. Impossibly beautiful. Along the walls: plants, growing through concrete, roots trailing toward the water far below.
Following the 1957 incident, the surviving engineers spent four years redesigning the reactor — now fully understanding the positive void coefficient flaw. The corrected design uses a passive cooling configuration and negative-feedback moderator geometry. Facility V-ZERO's reactor has operated without incident since 1961. It is the engineering solution to what will cause Chernobyl's destruction twenty-five years later. This solution was never shared. Sharing it would have required explaining how it was discovered.
3.2
The player finds incident reports from 1957. Heavily redacted. Enough survives: the incident was not an accident in the ordinary sense. A decision was made. Something was chosen over something else.
The redacted sections describe: the 1957 reactor event was survivable with immediate evacuation. Evacuation was not ordered for six hours — the delay during which the decision to classify was made. The three engineers who died in the lower chamber were not evacuated because evacuating them would have required acknowledging the lower chamber existed. The Kyshtym chemical spill cover story was drafted before the site had been fully assessed.
3.3
The player finds a personnel file. Two designations: V-7 and M-3. Prior relationship noted. Monitoring recommended. Stamped APPROVED. They find a reel-to-reel tape recorder. They press play. A voice reads the standard Watcher orientation briefing. The treeline. The forest path. The campfire left burning at the first checkpoint. The route the player just walked. Word for word.
The voice is V-7's. Recorded on arrival, October 1953. Standard protocol: incoming Watchers recorded their own orientation for future rotation handovers. V-7 has no memory of this. The memory suppression administered following the 1957 incident was comprehensive. The reactivation notice sent in 1987 described the mission as document retrieval. It did not mention prior posting. It did not mention M-3. The ministry sent V-7 back as a key — not as a person with context.
3.4
A second recording. M-3's voice. Something personal, addressed to V., recorded in the last days before the incident. Something unfinished. "I'll say it properly when we're out. I just wanted it to exist somewhere, in case." Static. Near the reactor core: M-3's workstation. Tools arranged, work unfinished. On the floor, under a rusted pipe — a second watch. Identical to the first. Still ticking.
M-3 was not recovered after the 1957 incident. The lower chamber flooded during emergency coolant discharge. Recovery was deemed operationally impossible and subsequently, administratively inconvenient. M-3 is listed in the ministry archive under "posting terminated — operational circumstances." No next of kin was notified. The second watch has kept accurate time for thirty years in the thermal environment of the reactor hall. It is correct to the minute.

§ 004 — Act Four: The Surface
4.1
The player climbs back through the facility, up the ladder, through the cabin floor. Outside: dawn beginning. Sky the colour of cold water. The lake below still glows.
At this moment, the Chernobyl exclusion zone covers 2,600 square kilometres. 350,000 people have been permanently displaced. The liquidators are sick; some have died. The engineering solution to the flaw that made all of this necessary has been running, unacknowledged, sixty metres below this valley for twenty-six years. The engineers who built the solution are dead. Several of the officials who buried the 1957 report are not.
4.2
The logbook is open on the table. The last page is blank. A prompt appears — the only one in the game that carries any weight:

The cursor blinks.
The automated administrative system also flagged the 1957 technical report as requiring retrieval and transport to the post-Chernobyl engineering review committee. The report — if submitted — would document the flaw, the solution, the cover-up, the three engineers not evacuated, and thirty years of institutional silence that allowed the RBMK to be built and operated with a known fatal flaw. What V-7 does with the report is not recorded in this document. It is the only decision the game asks the player to make that is not already made for them.
4.3
The game asks the player to confirm their designation before signing. The player checks their badge: V-7. The same signature that fills half the logbook. Three winters. Four years. Someone they don't remember being, with someone they don't remember losing. The player begins to write. It describes arriving at the treeline. The cold. The campfire. The flare at 02:47. Word for word, as if read from a briefing recorded long ago in their own voice. The entry cuts off mid-sentence.
The entry, once written, will be filed by the facility's administrative system with a new timestamp. A new maintenance schedule will be generated. The reactivation notice will be marked fulfilled. A new notice will be queued for the next review cycle — ninety days from now — addressed to designation V-7. V-7's rotation was never officially closed. It cannot be closed from inside the valley. The system contains no procedure for it. No one ever wrote one.
4.4
The game ends. The last image: the first campfire. Still burning. Waiting.
The valley keeps its Watcher.
